“Amara Terra Mia” is a song I’ve had in my repertoire since way back in 2007, and we decided to record it because we believe the theme is, of course, still very much relevant today. It’s a folk song that Modugno and Bonaccorti revisited in ’73, and it speaks of migration, of leaving one’s home and loved ones behind where even the hardest of work cannot feed one’s people. We always perform it with great passion, live, because many of us are the children or grandchildren of southern migrants, and also because we Italians have been one of the peoples who have migrated most across the world, in an attempt to survive, as well as to seek a better life for our families. In these times when we hear so much talk of immigration, we want to emphasise our history, our roots, so that we can view the current socio-political moment from this perspective too. From a production standpoint, like our previous releases and those on the upcoming album, the track was recorded live with the original line-up, with the guest artists and backing vocals overdubbed to highlight as much as possible the pathos that characterises the original piece, rearranging it but also completely reworking it to adapt it to the Jamaican Ska style with percussive elements drawn from traditional Cuban music. The icing on the cake is Phil Cuomo of The Uppertone’s Carosone-style piano interludes.
